As Henry J. P. Smith pointed out the problem about MS creating extra junk
in PS files solved my problem (I haven't seen it since). In one instance
the file created by re-routing the PS print to a file instead shrunk the
file from 127k to 24k. I suppose the extra data is some sort of fast
preview. Furthermore some of my figures turned up blank when imported into
LyX - removing the extra junk made them visible again.
Now my only problem is that printing to a file in win95 produces a figure
that fills an entire page no matter how small the figure is.
