* How to add a 'hypertarget' and 'pdfbookmark' to the TOC

don't use it. it is unimportant for new users. Use instead two versions of the images (eps and pdf) and in the file without an extension. Then the user can run latex or pdflatex. There are only two images in the user guide.

I don't understand what you mean... my desire was to get 'Contents' to
appear as a bookmark in the PDF-version (which I did thanks to your example btw).

I do not need all the hyperref stuff, when I want to have a dvi file. When the two images are in eps _and_ pdf format, then I can run pdflatex or latex without installing tex2pdf or epstopdf ...

I'm afraid I'm still confused. First I should say that I'm not using a
hypertarget, but only a pdfbookmark for the TOC, so that "Contents" appear
first in the bookmarks (only in the PDF file, where if you click on it
you're moved to the TOC).

Will this affect something else, related to the images?

sure, every stuff, which depends to pdf, bookmarks, colorlinks ,... This is all not needed when using the dvi file.

Herbert
