We've had misadventures with network drives and roaming profiles under Windows before. I'm not sure what causes the problems or whether the developers have found a fix. Without knowing what the network drive issue is, it's not clear whether writing the initial configuration to the user directory is necessary, and I'm not sure what the general implications would be. (Note that, on Windows XP, if you install LyX for "all users" then the configuration would be written to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\..., not to any one user's directory.

At any rate, I'm glad you've got them working.
