Dear colleagues, Please accept my apologies for Vortice Argentina's delay in forwarding its materials. As the person responsible for Vortice projects and events, I wish you to know the reasons behind such delays.
Back in 2001 a letter was sent to you all, signed by over 300 Argentine artists, stating the economic troubles our country was undergoing that not only affected mail art, but also a majority of Argentine participation in art events and contests abroad. In addition, my own personal problems (including my father's death in June 2004), also account for Vortice's three-year delay in forwarding mail art materials. The only annual event organized by Vortice Argentina is the "Mail Art Day". Information relating to this event is published on Vortice website, consequently anyone can have access to such data by simply visiting the site. Obviously, this is not what we promised! It was and still is our intent and our commitment to mail you all the appropriate documentation. And such thing could not be done. Last March, a group of mail art artists decided to take steps to solve our unending economic problems. Such decisions included the organization of Vortice Argentina as a non-profit association to enable Vortice to apply for grants and afford the expenses involved in the organization of our projects. The formalities are underway, and we will soon let you know about the completion of such procedures. In spite of our economic constraints, and to the extent of my possibilities, I always replied the messages that were received due to our delays. Probably those of you living in a different context find it hard to understand that my replies sometimes took longer than expected. For as long as my own situation (and the country's) allowed so, Vortice Argentina honored its commitment of sending you the documentation and the publications. Vortice's magazine was first published on a bimonthly basis, then, on a four-monthly basis, and finally, once a year. We used to forward some 300 copies of each edition, except for the last 4 years (2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004). In all cases, priority was given to participants of each Mail Art edition. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to publish the 2003 and 2004 magazines. However, I expect to be able to publish them this year and to send them to all relevant recipients. Finally, you will understand that participating in an event is obviously different from organizing it. A participant pays for only one shipment, whereas organizers have to afford the cost of some 400 shipments to all over the world. And our mail rates are currently very high, much higher that in the past I just thought I had to share with you my own hardships, and obviously, Vortice's. I continue working toward the participation, organization and dissemination of Mail Art. This is what I've been doing since 1996, it is one of my main activities, my passion. Now a group of Argentine artists will be helping me out. I thank you all for your patience and understanding. Cordially yours, FGD ...............................................................
