I know you can open Word 97/98/2000/2001/XP/X documents in Word 5 and 6
(with a plugin), but I'm not sure about the other way around.

How much are you willing to pay (&, if you're an academic user, what brand
would you use?)? AppleWorks is a steal compared to Microsoft Office (even
Word alone) for regular users. For academic users you shouldn't find too
much of a difference (at least, if you're at the U of T you can purchase
licences for Office for X for $100) and will have to decide based on what
you desire.

I'm still partial to using Word 2001 under OS X's Classic (don't like Word
for X).
