Yes, Appleworks is a functional and economical solution. It can indeed save Appleworks word processing and spreadsheet documents as Word for Mac ver. 6 and Word for Mac 98. It can also save in the Windows formats from Word 6/Win 95 up to Word for XP. Appleworks database files are saves as tab delimited ASCII text.
