The second idea did occur to me; (I have a G4 Quicksilver and I have
been swapping HDs in and out of it) but would the install be specific
to the host machine?

I've installed Tiger using "Target Disc Mode" and a laptop with a
DVD drive, but your iMac doesn't have Firewire, so that won't work.
You could yank the hard drive and put it into a different machine
to do the install, if you have access to one.
