Although I have 2 Macs running OSX and an older Win 2K PC, I decided to use
a router.

Internet sharing via the PC would be the cheapest option, only outlay being
an additional 10/100 ethernet card, but means the PC must always be on when
using the Macs. Also if the PC cops a virus/worm, it knocks out the internet
access for the Macs.

A router with a 4 port switch replaces the Freeserve supplied ADSL modem,
then connects to the PC and Mac via CAT5 ethernet cables. The PC must have
an ethernet port, if not it is easy to fit a card. All routers I've seen are
simple to set up via a web browser interface. The iMac would be set to
connect via ethernet and DHCP, and the same with the PC. The router then
automatically supplies different IP addresses to all connected Macs/PCs.

My router/switch cost me around 80 GBP from www.adslnation.co.uk, bought as
they are local to me. There are also many capable routers from D-Link,
Netgear etc.
