I've been using a router on cable for about three years without any problems other than the very occasional re-start. The PC is running off Airport but otherwise the set-up seems similar to your needs. http://www.amazon.co.uk and http://www.johnlewis.co.uk both have competitive prices. For wireless http://www/buffalotech.co.uk is an alternative to Airport.
