Hi, I'd like to us my hardware pc modem with my 7200 macintosh. Using a hayes 56k or 28k modem definition and the right kind of cable I can dial out and get for example tim (123 BT the talking clock) and the modem seems to respond.
From what I remember when connecting a USR 14.4 modem to the MAc I had at the time, a lot depends on the cable. In those days, some cables didn't have all the pins connected, and were limited to 9600bps or software (XON/XOFF) handshaking only to go faster. Others had all the pins connected (and I think needed a GeoPort socket, which was 9 pin rather than 8, but I could be wrong here), and could use hardware (ACK / NAK) handshaking as well. In this day and age (and particularly with 28.8 and faster modems), all cables _should_ allow hardware handshaking, but it may not be so.
Start off slow, with Mac to modem speed of 9600 bps, and using the Hayes command set, force the modem to connect at a fixed speed, and with software handshaking, to see if that works. Increase in stages a) Mac to modem speed; b) connection speed (until you get to auto-negotiate) c) handshaking method. The first and third can be done through the Control Panels, while the seconf may require a terminal window initially and typing in the AT commands. Once you find a combination that works, then use PPP settings to record this as a script.
Hope this helps. Alasdair
