Sorry, as I am unsure as to whether your 'you' above means 'one, an
individual' or you wished to implicate me personally, I'll give the benefit
of the doubt and carry on assuming this is not a personal attack. Please
correct me if I am wrong and we can deal with that separately.

To your post:

True, I suppose my law abiding head didn't have that thought. Probably one
of the few individuals on this planet to have legally bought appropriate
versions of Office as and when. (2001, v.X, 2004).

I was just amazed at the fact that there was so little control from MS (and
the place of purchase) in this matter. It used to be that you needed to at
least phone a number or send some paperwork in and after validation they
sent the product to you (at least when I was living in Germany). I was
expecting to have to show my ability to purchase this version...and then to
get home and find the complete product in the box in addition...well suffice
it to say that MS has found a way to sell OEM versions anew without the
nasty legal hassle of trying to bundle with a new PC.

To add my own question to this thread: I wonder what the legal stance would
be if a first party purchase the software illegally and then shortly
thereafter resold to another unrelated (and unknowing) party (with or
without other bits such as a computer). Is the second person then using it
illegally? They never said that they were a student and would certainly not
check the first parties credentials...In other words do the initial
conditions apply for the initial user only or every user regardless of other
conditions?

Cheers,

Richard
