When it comes to putting a document together then I agree with you totally - for what I want to do AppleWorks is fine. And I suspect a number of other packages would do the trick as well. But like Stuart says, if you have to send documents to Windows users and PDFs are not an option, then if you want the document to look the same at both ends you're probably going to have to use Word. OpenOffice is supposed to be pretty good at handling Word files, but requires the X11 window system at present. Anyone here using it?
