This is somewhat off-topic, although there is a Mac aspect.
My daughter has a broadband connection, via ethernet cable modem, from Telewest. The lass in the next room (flat) would like to share this, and they've talked about simply installing an ethernet hub and then extending out to the two rooms.
However, Telewest is one of those suppliers that requires the MAC address of the connected computer to be registered with them. Does an ethernet hub actually have a MAC address? I'm looking at one I've got (old 3Com 8-port OfficeConnect) and there's no mention as far as I can see of an internal MAC address. And thinking about it, a hub is just a pass-through device, isn't it? - so doesn't need an ethernet device itself...
I suppose that she's going to need a router, isn't she? - which does have a MAC address.
Has anyone on the list got a Telewest broadband connection with a cable modem connected to a router?
Oh, the Mac aspect: well my daughter's computer is a Lombard, which rather rules out wifi as well (I emailed the list voluminously a couple of months ago about the problems finding a suitable wifi card for a Lombard at the moment.)
