Did any of you see The Gadget Show on monday on channel five at 7:30?
They tested PCs and Macs against each other.
1) Easiest to Buy? - They just went round PC World.
The Mac was easiest to buy since they're all made by Apple and there are distinct "models" and "series".
2) Easiest to Set Up/Use - They got a complete newbie in to set up and get to their website all on her own.
Mac wins again. The PC took longer to set up, and then they encountered the "Try AOL for free!"... which didn't work! ;-)
3) Which is faster? - They got a Duel G5 and a comparable spec PC together, first they tried UT2004 then rendering in Photoshop.
In UT2004, the G5 ran at about 100fps while the PC was more at 200fps. And the PC finished rendering much quicker than the G5...... HOW CAN THIS BE?!
PC wins.
4) Which is easier/cheaper to fix? - They took a G4 and a PC and lobbed them off a balcony.
Neither worked at all after, the PC got a new �65 motherboard and was done (though the entire chassis was trashed. PC world don't stock parts, Apple helpline forwarded him to four local dealers, they couldn't sell him the parts (for good reason), it would cost �400 for a new logicboard and none had any in stock so it would be 3 days.
PC wins.
The final ruling was to buy a PC, you get more for your money and they're easier to repair.
My 2p;
The easier to fix one, well, if Apple gave you the parts after you forked out �400 for them and you installed it badly and killed it, there's another �400 down the drain. So they're really looking out for your interests. No parts in stock... this doesn't surprise me since the G4 isn't in production any more!
The speed test... I'm gob-smacked and quite frankly refuse to believe it! My G3/400 runs circles around my sisters AMDXP 1800+ (not that she uses it anymore, she has a G3/400 :-P) And how can the PC possibly win?! This is what Apple and Mac are famous for! Somebody please support me on this! The Game test I can believe more since Mac OS is a more "professional" platform though Apple have done a superb job in making Mac more accessible to the average user, though in my opinion, an even cheaper model is needed, bring back the pizza box!

They didn't address the issue that windows is utter rubbish! They didn't address that Mac OS X is UNIX-based not crap-based like windows is. They didn't comment on any of the iLife apps that come with it, they didn't comment on the fact that Office for Mac is better than Office for windows. They didn't touch on the topic of Mac requiring less technical support, less failures due to rubbish hardware thus less support calls, repairs. Nor did they touch on the fact that you can be sure that any Mac you buy is guaranteed to last far longer than any PC. And only the computer newbie commented that Macs are sexier than PCs... (she said that the Mac was definitely better)
And when it comes down to it. Mac have the edge, maybe not entirely technical, I mean PCs now have PCI-e while the G5 still has PCI-X, but you can expect a long service life out of your Mac, you can expect it to just work when you want it to, you can expect to get a quality product, as Steve said "Our competitors buy the panels we reject." talking of course about the LCD screens and finally you will get support when you need it, if you need it.
I am still pleased with the result however, they recognised two really important points, Macs are easier, easier to buy, easier to set up, easier to use, and easier to repair in that someone else will do it for you, at least then you can be guaranteed that your replacement part will be fitted and tested by an Authorised Apple dealer, and if it still doesn't work, they will own up to it.
I would like to leave on this note.
You get what you pay for. I don't need to explain this, you know.
