Did that version install a filesystem extension, perhaps?  I had a
situation where a filesystem extension that worked for Tiger caused
grave problems for Leopard, to the point where I had to boot up the
leopard machine in target disk mode and remove the stuff by hand.

When you say "empty desktop", do you mean that icons are missing, but
you can get a Finder window, or do you mean that Finder isn't working
at all, either?

I don't think that Amit was asking if he could ssh to your machine,
but rather if there was a way for YOU to gain access to your machine
other than using the Finder.
