OK, this is very basic question, but let me answer :) I see you doubt
in my abilities ;)

OK, so:
Finder -> Preferences -> General:
All four ticks are marked, it means:
- Hard disks
- External disks
- CDs, DVDs, and iPods
- Connected servers

However it doesn't matter, because I had bunch of other icons on the
desktop like my PDF files etc. and they also do not show up. however
when I open finder window and go directly to desktop folder then
everything is there.
