I will have to take a shot in the dark here.
Probably Henri or one of the others can correct me if I am wrong on
parts (or all) of this, but I am remembering that Java for Cocoa is for
apps that you download to your desktop and run (they use Java code).
The other Java stuff is for internet gizmos that run in your browser.
The windoze approach to Java is of course different (M$ and Sun keep
battling in and out of court on this one) and the thing that you
download for windoze IE is handled differently than for other platforms
because of the way M$ uses IE to run its operating system. So the
sloppy 1.4.2 version check would work in windoze and no where else
(complaints for the rest of the Java using world that Henri noted).
