Thanks for the suggestions (some time ago. I am just getting around to 
this again!).
I have turned on File Sharing in the iMac and designated the hard disk 
to share.
It can be seen in Chooser from any of the other computers on the 
network. I just can't figure out what it means 
when I select it in either OS 9 computer, Chooser accepts it, then it 
asks for user name and password which I enter correctly. Immediately I 
get a message saying that" the connection has been unexpectedly broken. 
"The password is right. Obviously Appletalk is working or I couldn't get 
that far....
I still can't see any of the other computers from the iMac. I guess I am 
looking in the right place. servers on the preferences?
