Ann, Are you able to log into the 10.1 computer via IP address? On the OS 9 computer, open the chooser, click on AppleShare and a button will appear at the bottom right of the Chooser stating "Server IP Address." Click that button, enter the IP address of your 10.1 computer and click Connect. Same results? Different?
