Hello Tiffany,

Well durn it anyway!

Hmm, with just the base system and no extra stuff, it should not be
hanging. As you noted, it will still run OS-9 with the Sonnet card
albeit slowly and with no extensions. It sounds like the problem is
with the Sonnet extension. I think you need to make use of the tech
support that comes with the card and ask Sonnet what is going on (The
things I had you do is what they would have had you do over the phone,
so that is out of the way.) Not to rule out a bad card which does
happen --- but many have upgraded their 6500s the same as you are doing
now, so I am thinking that the extension is a bad one (they will
probably have you download the extension and re-install it once more,
so try that just to be sure before calling them.

You should not have to rebuild the desktop, as the clean install should
have given you a new one.

What happens if you try to quit the finder as the extensions are
loading? (hold down the option key, the command (or open apple) key,
and the esc(ape) key all at once? Hold these down for a few moments,
then let them up and press return. Sometimes this will make the finder
restart and continue booting.

There is also a couple other things:

1) Zapping the PRAM a few times. (Some one correct me if I am wrong,
but I recall the key sequence as being something like the option,
command, p, and r keys all being held down at the same time during
start-up. Normally, the speaker gives off a beep when it happens. Doing
this a few times (letting it beep a few times) will clear out many
obstinate problems with stored settings. It also resets all of your
preferences back to the default as-it-came-out-of-the-factory settings,
so you will have to check all of your preferences including date and
time, etc.

The last thing (and this one is normally done by service techs so that
you don't void the warranty) is to open the case and pull the internal
battery, let the computer set for 10 minutes, then put it back in. This
also resets everything including putting the clock back to 1970.

                                        Jerry

p.s. Hey, after this is done, you will be able to get a job as a
service tech (Just Kidding Ward!!!!!!!!!!)
