IIRC, Apple introduced the extended disk format with OS 8.2. This
was a BIG change from OS 8.<2, and led to complications, so watch
your version numbers.

E.g. Norton Disk Doctor for 8 pretty much fried my hard disk after I
upgraded to 8.2. Fortunately, there was a program to undo the damage.

I have disks for OS 8.0, 8.1 and 8.6, if they would help.
