From this last description, it sounds like you have a bus-powered
  portable unit, as opposed to a standard desktop unit with it's own
  power-in cord.  I apparently wrongly assumed you had the latter.
   Sorry; please correct me if I'm mistaken.  I don't know *exactly*
  what to advise concerning the portable unit, except that a similar
  set of procedures ought to work for it as well.  Darn.
