John, try these: Is the file locked? Get Info on the file and make sure the locked flag isn't set.
Rename the file to something simple like: JUNK then try to trash it. Apple Support suggests that the name of the host volume not contain any special ASCII characters. Move the file out of the trash and use Disk Utility to repair permissions. Then try to trash it. If that doesn't work, you'll need to do it from Terminal, but I can't remember the commands.
