Aah, my first modern Mac. The directory problems may be hardware  
related, possibly a failing HD, the replacement of which is no causal  
task on an iMac all in one. I would back it up, mail, bookmarks etc.  
and reinstall the OS, what have you got to loose. If that doesn't  
work, and it turns out to be hardware related, you would be well  
ahead to buy a newer/used Mac. There should be a copy of TechTools or  
Apple Hardware Test floating around to verify the HD and CPU. I'll  
dig through my junk box, but I think I gave them away. Lastly, your  
scanning problems may be attributable to RAM deficiency...jf
