I repaired permissions, twice, and things did improve on one hand, but on
the other hand, I still can't see a cd rom on my desktop (either loaded in
the slot or in the external burner), so now I have to resolve the desktop
issue.  I can see the external harddrive there, though...Any ideas?  

I could use Lee's suggestions, getting at the root, but still need to know
line commands & such, sigh...

After that, I have to figure out why the hp scanner app keeps quitting or
won't print...always something, darn it!
