I use a Macbook (not a pro) as my main machine.
at home i hook it up to the 20" LCD and bluetooth keyboard and mouse,
as well as an external HD.

I love the set up. I would suggest 2 things if going this route and
you have critical things you need to work on.
1. use and external hard drive to keep a bootable backup. Time machine
is nice, but with a bootable backup (hurry up new SuperDuper!) you are
up and running in less than five minutes.
2. Invest in a cheap mac mini or something as an emergency backup
machine. You can hook it up to your TV as a media center for everyday
use, and then use it to boot up the external HD if there is a problem
with your Macbook(Pro) that it must be sent in for servicing.

It's nice to use a laptop as your main 'puter because there is less
problems with keeping files in sync.
and with laptop drives now coming in at an affordable 320 GB storage
capacity isn't as much of an issue.

Maybe wait until after macworld. Hopefully the pros will get a user-
replaceable HD like the plain old macbooks (oddly enough one of the
main things stopping me from getting a 15" model)
