Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken, but this seems to be a new (and dumb) behavior in iPhoto 09. In the previous version of iPhoto, I tagged everyone in my pictures using the keywords field. To search for them, I could just type their name. To find a picture with multiple people I would just type both of their names. For example, if I wanted to find just pictures of my mom and my sister together, i could type "Mom" and "Sis" in the search field.
Only pictures with *both* of them in it would show up. Now, in iPhoto 09, typing "Mom" and "Sis" shows all pictures with *either* of them in the photo. This is not a good way of doing things.
