John,
yes. it appears that if you change the names to something other than actual names (i.e. #1, #2, #3, etc.)
Then you can still use the keyword search in the proper manner.

of course, after changing the names in the Faces tab, typing "#2 #3" in the search field does not give you photos with just #2 AND #3. But if you use the old keywords, say John and Jane, then they are sorted correctly.

The problem then becomes, what is faces good for? If I have to keyword every person in a photo anyway, what's the point of using faces (especially considering that it doesn't write to the actual photo metadata anyway)? Additionally, if the list gets any larger than a few people, when the program asks "Is this person #9?" i'll have to look at the list to make sure that it's actually the person labeled #9.

hurmph.

I may have go go back to just using keywords until Apple gets this sorted out. The Places feature is nice, but it even runs dog slow on my new 2.5 unibody MBP with 4GB of RAM.

***LOVE*** the new iMovie though!

Rick,

You are doing a great job on this, what a hunk of work. What if you dropped the names on the cork board and listed numbers. I have 13 family members listed so if I took the names off and put 1 through 13 but their pictures remained so I would know who I was searching for if I did a search for #3, would you then be able to use the older Keyword search?

well, after some work, I've discovered that if you remove the individual names from the Faces cork board (thereby eliminating all our hours of work) then the behavior goes back to the default search of keywords.

sigh.
and iPhoto still won't write the keywords or gps info to the actual photo unless you export (making sure to mark the correct boxes), delete the photo from your library (to avoid duplicates) and then reimport the (exported) photo.

As much of a hassle and workaround as this is, I'm actually considering doing it for the majority of my photos just to be safe and have all my tagging work protected in case of a corruption to the iPhoto database...

Rick,

You are RIGHT! I have spent hours going through almost 5,000 pictures using the "faces" feature and am almost done. Previously I had done as you and listed combinations of people in the description area of the photo and could search the keywords for just those two. I had not tried this under the new iPhoto until your email and no matter how I fiddled with it this no longer works. Bummer and we should complain to Apple about this so they will add it back in, I sure intend to.

Thanks for finding this.

Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken, but this seems to be a new
(and dumb) behavior in iPhoto 09.
In the previous version of iPhoto, I tagged everyone in my pictures
using the keywords field.
To search for them, I could just type their name. To find a picture
with multiple people I would just type both of their names.
For example, if I wanted to find just pictures of my mom and my sister
together, i could type "Mom" and "Sis" in the search field.

Only pictures with *both* of them in it would show up.

Now, in iPhoto 09, typing "Mom" and "Sis" shows all pictures with
*either* of them in the photo.

This is not a good way of doing things. Am I missing something?
