Tom,

I assume by "bit the dust" you mean you threw it on the ground and stomped on it until you could justify an iPhone.

I also assume you meant to say you "don't" want to pay...

Anyway, I don't have an iPhone but do have the iPod Touch and can use it for Internet use (mail, view Internet sites, etc.) anywhere I can Internet access via Wi-Fi. I believe with the iPhone you can get Internet access through the cell phone or via Wi-Fi Access. With the iPhone I believe you pay extra for cell phone access to the Internet (data minutes) but not for Wi-Fi connection. I believe they have a plan with unlimited voice and data plan and are maybe going to have reduced rates for reduced data minutes. I would think that unless you plan on really, really using a lot of data time away from Wi-Fi areas you should get along fine with whatever they come up with for their cheapest plan.

Also you would be able to use any iPhone apps that do not require Internet access anywhere after you download the app. Some of the apps that require Internet connection are Wikipanion which gives you quick easy access to Wikipedia (for which you must have Internet connection). I use it and similar programs at home with my Wi-Fi network.

The compass app for the new iPhone 3gs really works like a compass via your cell phone connection (GPS). The compass app for my Touch works more like a sundial. The Touch has no idea where I am or which direction I am moving; but then of course, I frequently don't either.

Most of the apps available work just fine with either an iPhone or an iPod Touch. The iPhone has ,duh, phone capability, a microphone, GPS, and a camera none of which the iPod Touch has.

Have fun with your new toy.

Anne

P. S. There is a model railroad speedometer app you might want to try. RailSpeed only $0.99.

My cell phone bit the dust this week. So I'm thinking about getting a
iPhone. I want to pay any more subscription cost that I am now. So I guess the big question is "With the iPhone can one access the internet from a Airport or other wireless access point?" Do you need internet access to take
advantage of all the apps that are available?
