You might be able to find it cheaper if you shop around. I bought Applecare for my iMac on eBay for about 30% off retail. And for laptops it might be a sound investment as there are a few more moving parts to worry about.
And don't forget, you don't have to buy it right away. You can add it anytime before your first year is up. BTW, mine has officially paid for itself as of today when I had to have my third mouse replaced. I went to the Apple Store in Oxmoor, which was surpisingly calm for the day after Thanksgiving. A few minutes at the Genius Bar and I have a brand new mouse.
