If you gave them root access, the only things you can do is either completely 
restore from a backup that wasn't connected while they were having their way 
with your machine, or use the 'nuke and pave' route; i.e. reformat the hard 
drive and reinstall the operating system from scratch. My preference would be 
the nuke and pave route.

How did they get access? Online or in the flesh?
