I did not take notes, but it went something like this:

shut down, disconnect all perifierals and

Plug flash memory into USB. See it?
No

Restart and repeat.

Shut down and open BootCamp/ Win7. It doesn't see any USB either.

Shut down and restart OSX.

Create a new User.

Start up as new user. This may be when we restart holding down four keys,
perhaps Command Option P R. Wait for a double start, = two chimes.

Test USB with flash. I think the computer did not see it.

Shut down, restart as me. USB? I believe this time we saw USB periferals.

Perhaps unnecessarily, I then shut down, connected the periferals, restarted.
Took a second, but everything showed up on the screen.

I was then working with the 2nd level tech, who said he did not know why it
decided to work. He thot that what the furst tech did shud have fixed it
earleir.

Since all my data and backups were connected, I was scared, and I am grateful.

I think I'll add off-site back-ups.
