Keep on wondering because it's not for lack of using OS 8.1.  HFS+ doesn't
matter if you are accessing the drive via AppleShare.  AppleShare serves
files, not disks or disk sectors or such.  I have accessed HFS+ volumes on
everything from OS 8.1 to OS 9.1 with an SE running OS 7.5.5.
