With the router you are well on the way as it works just like hub. You can plug the iMac and the 636 into the router. Use regular ethernet cables. You should not need any additional software as networking has been built into the Mac OS for as long as I remember. You just need to set it up using the Control Panels. I don't recall the specific control panels to configure as they have changed since 7.5. Set AppleTalk to Ethernet, Turn on File Sharing (could be File Sharing or just Sharing Control Panel).
