Glenn: First step is to install an Ethernet card in the 636. According to LowEndMac <http://www.lowendmac.com/quadra/q630.shtml>, the Performa 636 can accept either an LC PDS or a Comm slot card. Plenty of LC/PDS cards are available on eBay <http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&query=lc+pds+ethernet&ht=1&st=2&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&BasicSearch=> for under $15.
Once you've installed the Ethernet card (and installed the drivers, if necessary), you'll plug both computers into the router using regular patch Ethernet cables, and plug the cable modem into the router's WAN port. The next step is to assign the the computers IP addresses, which will depend upon how your router is configured. I don't have a Linksys, so can't give you the specific steps, but here's the general theory: The router will have an address like "192.168.2.1". The computers will each need an address in the same subnet, such as "192.168.2.2" and "192.168.2.3". The computers can obtain these addresses in one of two ways: DHCP, in which the router automatically gives out an address each time the computers connect, or Static, which means that you enter all of the information into the MacTCP or TCP/IP control panels manually and it never changes. You router configuration page will have an option to enable or disable DHCP, so check the manual. (I'm not sure the older networking used in MacTCP can handle DHCP, so you are probably better off going with Static IPs.) Let us know if you need further clarification.
