I'd look at <http://atpm.com/network/> (three Macs and a printer). It is an
excellent way to learn how to network Macs, and it's in plain English. And
yes, you will need a Ethernet card. I think that 636 can use an Comm slot
Ethernet card or a LC PDS Ethernet card (I'd look for one on ebay).

I am using the exact same router/hub to connect 2 PCs and 2 Macs to a cable
modem. I'd start of by reading through the router's guide (if you don't have
the booklet, you can download it at
<ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/befsr11&befsr41ug.pdf>). The guide shows how to
setup PCs, however Macs have the exact same settings in the TCP/IP control
panel (for the iMac at least, I don't recall where the settings are under
system 7.5). It can be tricky though, because the settings sometimes have
slight name changes. The guide also tells how to setup the router; you'll
need to know the router settings before you can setup the computers. And
last, the guide also teaches some network basics.

If you decide to read through the stuff and have more questions, feel free
to contact me off list. Also, experiment; it is almost impossible to damage
a computer simply be fooling with its network settings.
