Erm… I hardly ever use the mini controller mode. I could say never,
because effectively it is never, but I'm pretty sure there have been
times it was used for something or other.

Not only do I not use the mini-controller, but the iTunes window is
almost always 1680x1050.

If we're going for anecdotal data points, I use the mini controller quite a bit because I like to have the play controls available without iTunes taking up unnecessary screen real estate. I'll open the full iTunes window, zoomed to full screen, to select and manage playlists, then go back to the mini controller while things are playing. I have iTunes assigned to every space, so it's always in a corner of my screen and, if I'm watching something with video, it stays with me if I'm doing things in more than one space. I do keep the mini controller in its larger configuration so that I can see track and time info.
