If you tell your computer to never sleep and then you turn off the screen 
(either via the screensaver of by pressing Shift-control+eject) then the 
periodic task that eyetv needs to run will not turn on the screen.

The computer actually consumes very little power when it is idle and the screen 
is off, and chances are quite good you will never notice the difference.
