I just put my iPads and iPod touch (and iPhones) "to sleep" by hitting the 
power button to turn off the screen.  They are not really "asleep" in the 
computer sense.  Just the screen turned off.   Instant on.   The iPad will go 
several days anyway.   Don't worry about it.  Just hit the power button to turn 
off the screen, and plug it in when you go to bed.
