I don't know the details, but that is part of it. Depends on the exact battery chemistry. I've read (don't know how valid it is) that cycles that are not complete cycles (ie, recharging after 10% depletion) doesn't count. I don't know. But the iPad I only charge when it gets down to 20-40% or so. So not every night as it seems to last a long time. But the iPhone I do nightly. My 5 year old regular 1st gen 2G iPhone, though it doesn't get that much use now (my son uses it for games like an iPod touch kind of), still holds a really good charge and the phone got used regularly, and charged nightly, for over 2 years, and intermittently since.
