What about the WASTE text editing library?  It would add most or all of
the basic editing features that people are asking for, it would leave the
fancy stuff (brace matching, syntax highlighting, etc.) to the external
editors that are already built to do those things, it's free, and the
majority of the work has been done.  I have never used it myself so I
don't know how hard it would be to plug it into MacPerl.
