I would say modifying the .dmg installer isn't worth it and installing
MacPorts into other than /opt/local ought to require a source install.
If
you agree, I can add a link for installing MacPorts from source on the
Wiki after 1.4 comes out and close the ticket.

I closed that ticket marking it as "wontfix", the dmg should be kept
as a one click solution for those accepting the default configuration.
I'd love it if you could write the Wiki entry on installing from
source, the installation section we had back on OpenDarwin (which I
liked quite a bit, we could mimic it) is completely gone, I think, and
we have nothing to offer to unacquainted newcomers.
