Hi,

Further to what Alex has mentioned, I usually set my iPhone and Mac to only use 
my phone number.  That is, when I send messages from my Mac, it appears to the 
receiver that I've sent it from my phone.  By doing this, all messages from me 
will stay within the same thread, not showing up as coming from my Apple ID or 
some other address that I have registered to my Apple ID.  So, using Alex's 
instructions, I would only have my iPhone number checked on each of my devices 
including my Mac.
