We decided to return our Home Pod for now. We are waiting for it to, hopefully, interface with our Sonos home theatre setup. That said, Home Pod definitely sets timers and alarms. It will say what the upcoming appointments on the calendar are. Unfortunately, this is currently only for one user.
Apple Music is not necessary. One can either place music in one's iCloud account, or purchase Apple Music Match and Home Pod will play said music. No matter how loud the volume is set, the mic is excellent. I never needed to raise my voice. And, the unit was able to understand me when I was in rooms near the lounge where we had the speaker. The rumour is that Home Pod should interface with Sonos systems when AirPlay II comes out. As Apple will most likely not raise the price of Home Pod, we decided to wait until it meets our use case before purchasing.
