Hi Donna, When we talk about mp3 we're dealing with a lossie format. In other words, it makes your files smaller by throwing away pieces of the sound that it thinks you can't hear. Often the result is comfortable to listen to and portable to cary around, and the trade off of quality vs space is acceptable.
Then we have lossless formats, like the free lossless audio codek or .flac format. Apple has it's own lossless .m4a format, and the pioneering shorten or .shn format. These formats can reduce the sice of an audio file by about half while leaving all of the sound wave presicely in tact. Well now here in Canada, one terabyte drives are down around $80 or less. Plus, I just got a rockboxed sansa e270, and I'll soon be getting a 16 gb expantion card for it. Maybe more than one eventually. With space becoming less and less an issue, Many of the people I know are switching to lossless and listening to their music in CD quality. I mean, we bought these discs. Most of us own hundreds, some own thousands, and we want to hear the music as it was meant to be, especially as it's not much more hardship than making mp3 files if you already have the space.
