Hi donna, it is possible. I know people who do it successfully all the time.
My issues were that I was already familiar with flac because of trading lossless live consert recording. Since I already have hundreds of these in flac and need the support anyway, I decided to stick with it for my CD collection. flac is also supported by my playback device and m4a is not it was easy to stay with flac. Then there was this lovely issue where I would set my ITunes encoder settings the way I wanted them and when I tried to confirm it would not accept the settings. So it doesn't support flac and it doesn't want to rip to the mp3 quality I wantso ITunes went out the window. Actually it stays for the simple reason that when musicbrains fails to find a CD Itunes almost always comes through. It even found some local artist CD's and stuff. The minorly irritating thing about this setup is that ITunes always hangs just a little bit. 3 seconds for every CD, and if I don't need that ITuneslookup for a while it starts to chafe..
