There is a utilities directory with terminal, AppleScript editor, Disk Setup, 
Digital Color Meter and a few other goodies.  This is inside the Applications 
directly or can be accessed from the finder with command-shift-ewe.

The disk should appear on the desktop, the "sidebar" of a finder window, and in 
the "Computer" finder item which can be found in the "GO" menu or via 
command-shift-C when in the finder.

To get more information about an item in the Macintosh the key sequence 
'command-I' often brings up a Info panel.   This works in the finder, in the 
list of mailboxes for Mail, and in iTunes.
