Hi Tim, all.
I subscribe to a weekly newsletter from about.com specifically focused on the mac and ios. what I read is that absolutely everyone has concerns serious security concerns about this use of icloud. Particularly noted in maverick is the Keychain, which fortunately has to be turned on. Still it gives a fine example of just how easy the risks can be. you are given a 4 digit number for the security, and there are only 1000 possible combinations making it practically effortless for someone to reach your passwords credit card information, documents contacts, and anything else you use icloud for. I still remember the senior writer with wired magazine who got hacked and all of his family photos and personal data wiped because someone on twitter liked his handle and could do it for kicks. I respect that the Internet is basically cheese cloth in general, but one should have a choice. More and more places like amazon are taking the force into icloud approach because everyone is doing it. Individuals should be able to protect and store their information as they prefer, not as a trend dictates in my view. Add that if you use facebook, your contacts are lifted when they make a shadow profile on you, including people not on facebook at all.
just my take,
By the way, the mac newsletter of Tom Nelson is rather informative actually. apple general I mean.

Hi,

I use Cloud services for just about everything. Google Apps is a Cloud
service, DropBox is a Cloud service and Apple’s iCloud is a Cloud service.
Even Carbonite is a Cloud backup service. In my opinion, these are safe and
secure options. Sure there are likely ways of hacking into some of this stuff,
but then again, just about everything on the Net has the possibility of being
intercepted in some manner or another, even when you’re simply surfing. or
sending eMails.

Documents aren't just for files, though, they are for apps. For instance, if you have an
app that supports iCloud on two iOS devices, that app can use iCloud to sync data between
them so that the app is the same on both. That's the "data" part of the
Documents and Data setting.

I just use iCloud for contacts and calendars as well. There is no need to put
documents in the cloud since there is dropbox! I am using Siri to dictate this

Hello,

If I didn’t have to teach VoiceOver, I wouldn’t have upgraded to Mavericks. I
don’t like iCloud either, but it’s become inescapable for someone who uses both
a Mac and an iPhone.

I restrict my use of iCloud to contacts and calendars which I share with my
husband. I never use it for documents.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi all, really want to update to Mavericks but this new OS is really making it
so hard to do so.
This article will explain why.
Basically, I have no interest or intention of using the service so
unfortunately where does that leave me.
P.S.
I hope I'm not the only one.
In particular, really concerned about syncing contacts
Guess you could say I'm paranoid about my contact data up in space.
