 Thanks for the prompt reply.

 Re: opening Makefile.inc - sorry, my mistake with cut and paste. I did not
 open. What I did was Make.

 Re: ...without having created the STA VAP first hand. Note that I had
 issued the commands

      /etc/init.d/networking restart
      wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta

 before hand. The card worked fine in station mode until I attempted to put
 it in monitor mode.

 Here are a few things I attempted today. I followed the Howto Changing
 Interface Mode at
 http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/ChangingMode

      ~$ ifdown ath0

         There is already a pid file /var/run/dhclient.ath0.pid with pid
 5913
         killed old client process, removed PID file

 .....the computer freezes, no possible recovery.
