 Hello -

 just upgraded to wireless-tools 28 just in case, but the problem persists.
 Computer cannot connect even in the same room as the access point, when it
 gets about 2 metres away from it...

 to (slightly) increase link quality I turned diversity off

 /proc/sys/dev/wifi0/diversity is set to "0"
 /proc/sys/dev/wifi0/txantenna is set to "1"
 /proc/sys/dev/wifi0/rxantenna is set to "1"
